What your filter catches
What it stops is what they'd have showered in.
A cartridge doesn't turn brown on its own. Everything on it came down your pipes. At your free test we pull your water through filter paper in front of you, so you see it before you decide anything.
- Sediment and silt stirred up in the mains. Utilities call it harmless; it still ends up somewhere.
- Rust and pipe-scale particles from older mains and household pipes.
- Chlorine or chloramine, the disinfectant, reduced by the carbon stage before it hits a hot shower.

One warm shower
Health Canada estimates a 10-minute warm shower in chlorinated water gives the same uptake of chloroform, a disinfection by-product, as drinking 2.7 litres of that water. You breathe it in the steam and absorb some through skin.

Bath time counts too
In the same review, an adult's 30-minute bath added about 2.6 litre-equivalents of chloroform through breathing and skin, on top of what they drank. An under-sink filter does nothing about it.

Lead in the fittings
Only lead-free plumbing products (no more than 0.25% lead) can be installed on drinking water pipes from 1 May 2026. Homes plumbed before then can still have older brass fittings. We screen for lead at your tap.

Yes. Australian city water is treated to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. A filter deals with what is still in it after treatment: the chlorine or chloramine you taste and breathe in the shower, the scale that builds up in your appliances, and the sediment picked up in kilometres of pipe on the way to your house.
Why does a used filter cartridge go brown?
Brown is mostly fine sediment: silt, rust and pipe-scale particles that settle in water mains and get stirred up when flow changes. Utilities describe this sediment as harmless, but it is there, and a sediment cartridge at the meter catches it before it reaches your taps, shower and hot water system.
How much does whole-home water filtration cost?
Whole Home systems start from $3,990 installed, including GST, plumbing and the compliance certificate. Your exact price depends on your water and home, so your Water Specialist gives you a fixed written quote after your free in-home water test. Nothing is signed or paid on the day.
Is the water test really free?
Yes. 30 minutes, nine tests at your tap, with every result explained the same day. Your Water Specialist then gives you a written recommendation and a fixed quote, in person or by email. Nothing is signed or paid at your home.
What does a whole-home filter do?
It sits where water enters your home, usually beside the meter, and filters every tap, shower, bath and appliance. Our systems use a sediment stage and a carbon stage certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odour. It does not soften water or remove PFAS; those need add-ons, which your test results will recommend only if they are relevant.

A licensed plumber from our partner network in your city, who lodges a compliance certificate. Every product we supply is WaterMark certified.
